D UCHESS AND I STOOD ON THE PORCH and watched him drive away. The garden was mad with color—gold and yellow and russet mums in bloom. The potted plants sold better than the cut flowers, but either way, when set among dried flowers, they screamed autumn. I thought how California needed that, its seasons being hard to separate. You’d think colored ribbon would work for those arrangements, but it was actually plain old wheat-colored raffia that did them justice. Nance’s touch, I knew. I thought of the construction-paper turkeys I used to make with the kindergarteners, back before J.W. and prison and my life went downhill. A pencil tracing of each tiny hand, then cut out colored-paper feathers for the turkey’s tail. It seemed like somebody else’s life.

It was too early in the morning for anyone to be up. Nance might be working at the computer, but everyone else was nestled into sheets, finishing up dreams. I stood there trying to ground myself, to believe I was really here. Then I opened the screen door, fully aware that I was inviting chaos into my entire being.

“Who’s there?” I heard Phoebe call out.

“What’s she doing awake this early?” I asked Duchess, and Duchess, in her infinite dog wisdom, knew better than to answer that question.
